Microorganisms are ubiquitous. They play a vital role in both human and environmental health. Also they have multifaceted applications like bioremediation, biofuels, biopolymers, enzymes, bioactive compounds and so on. Majority of microbial biodiversity of India is still least explored for many applications. My research group is engaged in studies related to understanding of functional microbes from unique environments using various approaches in genomics and transcriptomics from classical to modern tools. Our efforts are keeping in mind the future demand especially for applications in the areas of Microbiology and Biotechnology.
I am also in-charge of National Collection of Industrial Microorganisms (NCIM), which is India's one of the oldest microbial culture bank that holds industrially important microorganisms like bacteria, yeast, fungi, algae. NCIM provides services like microbial culture supply, culture deposit, identification, loyphilization. NCIM also contributes to the bio-based economy and is an affiliate member of WFCC and WDCM.
