Degree Program At NCL
NCL has an active research program leading to Ph.D. degree in different subject areas under the disciplines of Chemical, Physical, Biological and Engineering Sciences. It provides a stimulating atmosphere, which fosters creativity and encourages innovative thinking and research. NCL also offers M.Tech degree in Chemical Engineering in addition to Ph.D.
The PhD program consists of flexible course work, laboratory training, research project to demonstrate attainment of a high degree of scientific ability which is followed by advanced research leading to a PhD thesis on a specific topic. The PhD program is normally completed in 4-5 years. During the first year, the students have to go through a course work covering basic and advanced topics. The students are encouraged to take courses in inter-disciplinary areas. Apart from the subject courses, a course in scientific communication is mandatory for all the students. As part of the PhD program, the PhD student is expected to give at least two seminars.
The integrated PhD program in Chemical Engineering after a 4-year Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and allied areas is designed to be completed in five years (4 years for students with M Tech). It consists of coursework in core Chemical Engineering areas followed by elective courses in specialized topics. The coursework requirement is lower for students who join the program with an M Tech degree. PhD candidates are expected to write and defend a research proposal, and undergo a comprehensive exam. A thesis, together with publications and/or patents that results from research mentored by a PhD advisor is evaluated by a committee for award of a PhD degree. The program is designed to equip students to pursue independent research careers in academia, or in the R&D divisions of industries.
The M Tech course consists of rigorous coursework, which also fulfills the PhD coursework requirements, followed by a one-year research project supervised by an NCL scientist. The program is designed to prepare students for careers in industrial R&D, as well as for a PhD program.
