PhD (Sciences)


Admission for the PhD program in science is done twice a year, in the month of June and December. Advertisements will be placed in national newspapers and Employment news after the CSIR/UGC NET results are announced. Admission is through a technical and personal interview. The admission requirement for the PhD program in the science stream is MSc in any branch of science with first class (60%) and should have qualified for a UGC/CSIR/DBT/ICMR/BINC/INSPIRE Junior Research Fellowship.

M Tech and PhD (Engineering)

Admissions to the M Tech program in Engineering will be held once a year in June/July. Admission to the PhD program will also be held at the same time, with the possibility of an additional round of admissions in December. Advertisements will be placed in national newspapers and Employment news after the GATE results are announced. Admission is through a technical and personal interview. The admission requirement for the PhD program is MSc in any branch of science with first class (60%) and any one of the UGC/CSIR/DBT/ICMR/BINC/INSPIRE Junior Research Fellowships; or a valid GATE score.

Industry-Sponsored PhD

Guidelines:
  • All industry employees undertaking PhD work at NCL should have a minimum full-time work experience of one year at their company (which shall be the industry partner in the proposed work) prior to commencement of PhD work at NCL
  • All admissions, registration, course requirements, and other guidelines governing the PhD work, thesis submission (and all related work) shall be governed by existing rules, regulations and guidelines followed by AcSIR and/or the Student Academic Office (SAO) at NCL, as appropriate.
The following categories of collaboration with industry partners for PhD work are possible at NCL:

  • PhD Candidate: NCL student/researcher (identified solely by NCL or jointly)
  • Topic of Research: Jointly identified by NCL and industry partner. The PhD research topic should be such that students will be able to publish their work in the form of peer reviewed scientific papers and thesis.
  • Location of PhD research: Mostly at NCL
  • Research Outcome: Industry wishes to have stake in taking it ahead
  • IP to be owned fully by NCL
  • Industry partner gets Right of First Refusal on the IP
  • Terms for commercialization to be decided later through a separate agreement

Rs. 10 (Ten) Lakhs + GST per year

For a period of 4 years

(duration to be finalized based on the scope of work involved)

The salary of the PhD candidate to be paid from the above fee received by NCL

  • Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to be signed before the start of the work
Category 2
  • PhD Candidate: Industry employee deputed to do PhD
  • Topic of Research: Jointly identified by NCL and industry partner. The PhD research topic should be such that students will be able to publish their work in the form of peer reviewed scientific papers and thesis.
  • Location of PhD research: Mostly at NCL
  • Research Outcome: Industry wishes to have stake in taking it ahead
  • IP to be jointly owned by NCL and industry partner
  • Proportion and terms of IP sharing to be mutually decided, at a suitable time
  • Terms for commercialization to be decided later through a separate agreement

Rs. 8 (Eight) Lakhs + GST per year

For a period of 4 years

(duration to be finalized based on the scope of work involved)

The salary of the PhD candidate to be paid directly by the industry partner

  • Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to be signed before the start of the work
  • Joint Invention Administration Agreement (JIAA) to be signed before filing of the first IP generated
Category 3
  • PhD Candidate: Industry employee deputed to do PhD
  • Topic of Research: Jointly identified by NCL and industry partner. The PhD research topic should be such that students will be able to publish their work in the form of peer reviewed scientific papers and thesis.
  • Location of PhD research: Mostly at Industry site
  • Research Outcome: Industry wishes to have stake in taking it ahead
  • IP to be jointly owned by NCL and industry partner
  • Proportion and terms of IP sharing to be mutually decided, at a suitable time
  • Terms for commercialization to be decided later through a separate agreement

Rs. 2 (Two) Lakhs + GST per year [Any analysis of large number of samples to be taken up as a separate project]

For a period of 4 years

The salary of the PhD candidate to be paid directly by the industry partner

  • Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to be signed before the start of the work
  • Joint Invention Administration Agreement (JIAA) to be signed before filing of the first IP generated
Category 4
  • PhD Candidate: NCL student-researcher or Industry employee
  • Topic of Research: To be identified by NCL. The PhD research topic should be such that students will be able to publish their work in the form of peer reviewed scientific papers and thesis.
  • Location of PhD research: Partly or entirely at NCL
  • Research Outcome: Industry has no stake in taking it ahead
  • IP to be fully owned by NCL

Rs. 8.5 Lakhs (Eight Lakhs fifty thousand) + GST per year

For a period of 4 years

If the salary is paid directly by the industry partner to the PhD candidate the fee will be Rs. 3.5 Lakhs (Three Lakhs fifty thousand) + GST per year

  • Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) or a suitable agreement to be signed before the start of the work
Category 5  
  • PhD Candidate: NCL student-researcher or Industry employee
  • Topic of Research: To be identified by NCL or jointly
  • Location of PhD research: Partly or entirely at NCL
  • Funding through a funding agency or unrelated third party

    Example: PM Research Fellowship or other such cases

    In cases where no industry partner is involved in any part of the project work, this category would not apply, and it would be governed by existing guidelines for such collaborations at NCL

  • IP to be fully owned by NCL
  • OR
  • As per the rules and regulations of the funding agency (to be decided on a case to case basis)

Fee and duration to be finalized based on the scope of work involved, and as per the rules and regulations of the funding agency
