CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL) is one of the few institutes across India, where the total synthesis of natural products is pursued extensively. Researchers at CSIR-NCL have developed innovative synthetic methodologies and completed the total synthesis of several complex natural products with medicinal relevance, such as anticancer, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory agents. Through collaborations with academic and industrial partners, CSIR-NCL has advanced drug discovery efforts and supported the development of new pharmaceuticals, reinforcing its role as a leader in chemical and pharmaceutical research in India. By studying the intricate structures and biosynthetic pathways of natural compounds, we aim to design novel, efficient and scalable routes to their synthesis in the laboratory. We focus on a wide range of natural products, including alkaloids, terpenoids, phenolics, glycosides, polyketides, cyclic-depsipeptides and lipids and fatty acids all of which are known for their diverse and potential medicinal applications. As the demand for new medicines continues to grow, the role of total synthesis in drug discovery remains crucial. NCL’s Organic Chemistry Division, with its rich history and cutting-edge research, is poised to continue making significant contributions to global health. Through their work, they are not just synthesizing molecules; they are unlocking the potential of nature’s pharmacy, turning complex natural products into life-saving therapies that have the power to change lives.
