MY RESEARCH INTERESTS

DNA barcoding and genetic diversity analysis

We have developed DNA barcodes for species of the Dalbergia genus and currently developing barcodes for eight genera from the family Leguminosae. We have collected these species from various regions in and around the Western Ghats. In the past, we performed genetic diversity analysis in Symplocos laurina, Symplocos racemosa and Indian sheep breeds.

DNA markers and QTL analysis

We've developed well-saturated molecular linkage maps and tagged agronomically important traits in chickpea and wheat using various marker systems like RAPD, ISSR, SSR, etc. We have also developed new markers like genomic and EST-SSRs and SNPs in linseed / flax. QTL mapping of agronomic, yield and quality traits was performed in chickpea as well as wheat.

Bioinformatics analysis of gene families

We are working on membrane transporter gene families from the fungal pathogens as well as tree species. These transporters have been chosen for their reported roles in biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. We have also confirmed their expression in vivo in response to environmetal and biotic stimulii.

Biotic and abiotic stress tolerance at molecular and biochemical levels

Our group is working on deciphering the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of biotic (plant pathogen interactions) and abiotic (environmental) stress tolerance in crop plants. In biotic stresses, we are working on two systems: chickpea-Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. ciceri and wheat-Bipolaris sorokiniana. Whereas, in the abiotic stress tolerance, we are working on adaptation of tree species from Western Ghats to water stress and salinity tolerance in grapes. We employ various "omics" approaches in our studies including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and bioinformatics.
