L. K. Doraiswamy

Dr. L.K. Doraiswamy received his B.S. from the University of Madras and his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin. He joined NCL in 1954. By the time he retired in 1989, Doraiswamy had served as the first non-chemist Director at NCL.

Through numerous books and prolific original publications, Dr Doraiswamy has made outstanding original contributions to the science and practice of chemical engineering. He has made seminal contributions to the area of gas-solid catalytic and noncatalytic reactions, stochastic modeling, solid-solid reactions, phase transfer catalyst-mediated reactions and fluidized bed reactors. He provided leadership to a team of process chemists and chemical engineers at NCL and contributed to the development of several innovative catalysts and few catalytic processes for fine chemicals.

Dr Doraiswamy's many honors include the Padma Bhushan, and the Richard H. Wilhelm Award of the American Institute of Chemical Engineering. In the year 2000, Dr Doraiswamy received the Margaret Ellen White Graduate Faculty Award, was the Research Foundation lecturer at the National Chemical Laboratory in India, and served as Distinguished Visiting Fellow, Dow-Professor M. M. Sharma, Chemical Engineering at the University of Mumbai, India. In the summer of 2003 he was recognized with the Godrej Lifetime Achievement Award by the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers for his contributions to chemical engineering in India.

At present, Dr. Doraiswamy is the Anson Marston Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at Iowa State University, whose faculty he joined in 1989 after his retirement from NCL.
