The CFPE laboratory is equipped with three state-of-the-art rheometers:

  • a controlled strain rheometer (ARES),
  • a controlled stress rheometer (BOHLIN CVO-50) and
  • a LabView driven capillary rheometer (RHEOVIS 2100).

Together these allow for measurement of all material functions of complex fluids under shear flow. The group also has the SER accessory that enables measurement of the transient elongation viscosity of melts as well as other material properties such as tear strength and tack. The group specializes in developing rheo-optical techniques to study stress-birefringence in viscometric and complex flow fields. These in situ measurement facilities are built around a Linkam shear cell and the capillary rheometer. Such measurements are augmented by viscoelastic CFD simulations using the commercial POLYFLOW code.

The CFPE group works closely with the Polymer Processing Centre (PPC), which houses processing equipment such as a DSM microcompounder and microinjector, Haake Polylab system, Berstoff ZE-25 twin-screw extruder, Arburg injection molding machine, Instron UTM and Ceast Izod impact tester.
