NCL provides a highly stimulating environment for students to pursue exciting research at the cutting-edge of science and technology.  A distinguishing feature of studying at NCL is the exposure that students receive to work that bridges applied research to high-quality fundamental science.  This is the reason that our students are highly sought-after in both academia as well as industry.

 

The experimental and computational facilities available at NCL are state-of-the-art, comparable to the best in the world, and are backed up by excellent analytical support.  NCL scientists are globally well-established researchers and publish widely in internationally acclaimed journals.  NCL has excellent library facilities with access to a large number of journals and literature/patent databases in both electronic and print formats.  The library is open all seven days of the week and students have access to it even after office hours. 

NCL scientists are registered as guides at local universities (such as the Universities of Pune and Mumbai or at IITs).  Our students carry out research at NCL, but register at and receive their degrees from these Universities.  Students at NCL get the benefit of course-work tailored to their interests.  We draw on the best teachers in the country to teach our students – for example, in the area of Polymers, our teaching faculty include Professors from IIT and IISc in addition to industrial researchers and, of course, our own scientists.  This course-work forms an essential part of the professional training that students receive at NCL. 

NCL provides hostel accommodation to its students.  The hostels also run a canteen or "mess". The newest hostel - the Golden Jubilee Hostel - is a modern hostel with excellent facilities including sports grounds, a gymnasium, and a fully-equipped recreation room with a big-screen television.  Some students are day-scholars, while others prefer living off-campus as paying guests and eat at private "messes" in the neighbourhood.  NCL assists students by loaning them basic furniture, depending upon availability.  The NCL campus has a shopping center, medical center, post office, bank, school etc.  Students can avail of amenities such as the open-air theatre (with weekly films), and sports facilities including play grounds, tennis courts, a basket ball court, a flood-lit volley ball court, badminton courts, table tennis tables etc.  The student community at NCL organizes several social and professional events including an annual meet and celebration called the RSM (Research Scholars Meet), seminars by invited speakers, sports tournaments, cultural programmes etc.
